Eco Ways

It is very easy to feel hopeless in the face of climate change. And, therefore, easy to feel like there is no point doing anything to help. But there is, and this is the time when we should all be doing as much as we possibly can. No matter how small, every little thing counts. Here are a few of the innovations we find exciting in the fight against climate change.

Recycling:

Reduce, reuse, recycle – these three words may be a little ‘old hat’ but they are still important. New innovative ways of recycling are coming through, meaning an increasing amount of things are not only being recycled, but also being made from recycled materials, like the scarves we sell made from recycled plastic bottles, or the bird feeders made from recycled plastic plant pots. Buying new items made from recycled material is becoming a norm, which is a great step towards looking after the planet. And there are people and companies currently working on recycling mixed plastics and recycling plastics that aren’t yet recyclable. This allows us to buy new with less impact on the planet.

Energy:

Wind, wave, hydrogen, solar… we are increasingly harnessing the worlds renewable powers, rather than using up the finite resources such as oil and gas. Though there are problems with renewable energy sources (such as taking up wildlife land) the more we innovate the more we can protect the planet. The government is bringing in new green energy grants in April – which you can read up on to see if they are for you. And you can ask energy suppliers if they have grants for making your home greener – all above a certain size should have something to help, but there may be ways you have to qualify for support such as age and income.  You don’t have to ask your energy supplier – if you have the time, you can go through them all.

Sustainable Sourcing:

Sourcing sustainably – food, fabric, and everything else – will also help protect the planet. Whatever you buy try and buy as sustainably as you can find and afford. It is becoming increasingly easy to find information on sustainable food, such as finding out what is in season.

We have a blog on sustainable food buying here. But one of our top tips is to buy local when you can. But there are innovations in farming too. Including people experimenting in growing on tiers, so less water is used.
